Part of the charade," he reminded her patiently. "I was wondering what
plans you would like to make for lunch."
"Oh." She considered the matter and then said, "Actually, I did have
some things to do today at home. Maybe dinner—"
"I'll bring some papers along and work on them while you're doing the
things you wanted to do around your apartment," he interrupted. "We can
have a sandwich or something for lunch. Doesn't have to be fancy."
For an instant Sophy thought she saw the jaws of a very lethal trap
closing around her, and then she dismissed the image. She could handle
Max Travers. As well as the management of S & J Technology.
Actually things might be easier if Max was busy working. She knew how
totally involved people like him became when they were in the middle of a
problem. She'd seen her parents disappear into their study for endless
hours often enough. "All right, if that's what you would prefer."
"I'll get my briefcase from the hotel," he said before she could change
her mind.
An hour later Sophy found that having Max in her kitchen was a
strangely unsettling experience. He immediately adopted the kitchen table
for a desk, appearing quite satisfied with the surroundings although they
must have been much different from those in which he normally worked.
"What are you going to be doing this afternoon?" he asked as she
opened the refrigerator to prepare sandwiches.
"I'm making a dress for one of the women at the office." Sophy found
some cheese and a tomato and placed them on the counter. "Whole wheat
bread or rye?"
"Rye please." He waited a moment and then said carefully, "That black
dress you brought into the office the other morning looked rather nice."
She smiled cynically. "Thank you."
"Do you make your own clothes too?"
"Max, I know you're not really interested in discussing my sewing.
Mustard or mayonnaise?"
"Both. What makes you say I'm not interested in your sewing?"
"Let me see if I can remember all the reasons why someone shouldn't
take a hobby like sewing too seriously," she drawled, recalling her parents'
lecture on the subject "It's frivolous, takes up time that could better be
spent on studying, and doesn't really engage the brain to any important
extent"
"Whom are you quoting?" He half smiled, looking up from the table to
watch her make the sandwiches.
"My mother and father. They were horrified when it became apparent
that dress design wasn't going to be just a hobby for me but my main
interest in life. They're going to be even more shocked when they find out I
intend to open a design boutique here in Dallas." She slapped the cheese
on the bread and sliced the tomatoes. When she turned to carry the
sandwiches over to the table, she found Max smiling at her.
"It was hard on you, wasn't it, Sophy?" he asked quietly. "Growing up
with two academically brilliant parents…?"
"Who couldn't bring themselves to admit that they hadn't produced an
equally brilliant child. Yeah, it was a little tough at times." She smiled
wryly. "But I survived. And so did they."
"They love you."
"I know."
"You're lucky," he murmured.
She glanced up, frowning. "What do you mean?"
"Only that through all the trauma and the frustration, at least you knew
you were loved.
